Military Education Advances Career

Author: admin  //  Category: Careers Employment

After active duty service, many soldiers can’t find jobs because their military skills ar not enough to help them compete with college degree holders in the workforce. That’s why many federal and private organizations support them with followed programs.

Returning soldiers might consider taking college courses or enrolling in degree programs online or on campus as part of Montgomery GI Bill benefits. Individuals who served in any branch of the US Armed Forces for more than 90 days after the date of September 10, 2001, are also eligible to take advantage of a Post-9/11 GI Bill that could help them complete campus-based or online degree programs by paying up to the highest in-state tuition and fees. In addition, for some, there are allowances for housing and books. A US Senate Committee on Veterans Affairs in August approved an expansion of the Post-9/11 GI Bill as well.

The expansion is known as the Veterans Employment Act of 2010.

With it, veterans would receive Post-9/11 educational assistance also for apprenticeships and job training, and the Labor Secretary would provide monthly allowances to unemployed veterans enrolled in eligible full-time employment training programs where they learn skills related to in-demand careers. The Veterans Employment Act also calls for ways that colleges, universities and technical schools could provide veterans with academic credit for military experience and training.

The unemployment rate among Iraq and Afghanistan veterans for July 2010 was 11.8 percent, about 4 percent higher than the rate for the same month last year, as well as the July 2010 rate for veterans overall, according to the Marine Corps Times.

The Veterans Employment Act calls for the Small Business Administration to help veterans of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom in some areas to receive entrepreneurial training and counseling and to assist veterans who own and control businesses. States, on the other hand, through grants would be able to establish volunteer and employment opportunities for veterans in state conservation projects, while the Secretary of Defense provides veterans with employment in military construction projects. In addition to programs that would help veterans build upon existing information technology and healthcare skills when entering careers in these fields, the Veterans Employment Act directs the Labor Secretary to encourage the employment of veterans in the energy industry.

Some veterans interested in filling state jobs related to the environment and increasingly “green” jobs within the energy industry and elsewhere might consider online degree and certificate programs that could help them update existing skills. A 2009 White House study estimates that by 2016 green jobs will have grown by 52 percent from 2000 levels. To create what some refer to as “green collar” jobs, President Barack Obama in 2008 said he would spend $ 150 billion over the course of a decade, a Time magazine article reported.

Veterans have an array of college, university and technical school programs related to the environment from which to choose. Institutions throughout the country last year established or announced more than 113 academic programs with sustainability focuses, the Association for Advancement of Sustainability in Education reports. As Illinois colleges and universities add new green classes, they’re filling up quickly, a summer 2010 report in suburban Chicago’s Daily Herald noted. In California, where the state intends to slash carbon emissions by 25 percent into 2020, gas and electric companies have suggested that mechanics be trained in natural gas technology, an article in the community college magazine Affinityonline reported.

The focus at community colleges particularly is on training for “green collar” jobs that Affinityonline reports often require manual labor. These types of jobs might be found in sectors such as energy, agriculture, construction, transportation and alternative fuels – and they don’t necessarily require a bachelor’s degree, the online publication noted. Veterans particularly are a focus of natural gas programs scheduled to start in 2011 at a community college and a technical school in Pennsylvania, where they might receive instruction in welding and brazing, rotary drilling and more.

Many colleges, universities and technical schools have been adding programs such as these with help from federal stimulus money. While the programs could prove rewarding for a variety of people, veterans particularly might find them a productive and fulfilling way of making use of military education benefits and easing transition to civilian work. Veterans and others participating in sustainability programs through college online courses might also find themselves better positioned for existing job openings and jobs that open in the future.

Small Business Advertising Tips

Author: admin  //  Category: Small Business

When watching TV or flipping through a magazine you often see advertisements from large corporations like Coca Cola, Ford, and Nike, have you noticed that these companies aren’t selling you a specific product or service. The reason for this, is that the purpose of their advertisement is to sell you brand preference and brand loyalty. This is great, if you have millions of dollars to spend on a branding campaign and your comapny is a household name with millions of people. Unfortunately most small businesses do not have the luxury of immediate brand recognition and loyalty by millions of consumers. So what can you do to have more effective adverting on a shoestring budget? Let me share with you a few secrets of effective small business advertising.

Advertising: Does Yours Work?

Secret 1

Stop trying to sell with your ads. You adverting is not a vehicle to sell a product or service.

When you do this, most of the time, you are throwing your advertising dollars down the drain. I believe that less than 1% of the audience that sees an ad that tries to sell will actually take the next step and make a purchase. It is probably much less than 1% but I’m being optimistic that your advertising dollars spent up until now have been well spent.

Secret 2

Look for and then identify the main concerns of your target market and use these as the basis for each ad or mini article you use as a promotional tool. Whether you write a 30 word print advertisement, a 30 second radio commercial, or a 600 word advertorial (an advertisement made to look and sound like a news story), take a look at what you wrote and see if you are trying to sell something to your audience or are you trying to inform them.

Consumers, for the most part are looking to be educated about a product or service, told that the features and benefits of using are right for them and then made to feel that by purchasing your product or service they have made the correct decision. You still need to grab your audience’s attention and keep them interested in your advertisement, but make them feel as if they are learning something that will help solve a problem or need.

Secret 3

Don’t expect one advertisement to do all the work and bring in loads of clients and customers. Advertisement is a system of engaging and informing consumers at all points of contact. You need develop a marketing and advertising system where all you advertisements work together to relay key messages to your audience.

Advertising is part art but also part science. There is a proven formula for making small businesses advertising more effective. The trick is what you say within the confines of the advertising formula. But that is another article. Stay Tuned!

Verification management

Author: admin  //  Category: Management

Design Verification is estimated to consume about 70% of resources for chip development. A clear understanding of how so much resource is being spent often eludes Verification management and engineering teams alike. With rising complexity of designs, verification managers are on the lookout for effective methodologies that can reduce the risk of failure, streamline verification activity and provide management the required systematic information about progress and quality.

Verification plan development is often a laborious ritual held at the start of a large project only to be cast aside as the project unfolds. Developing a verification plan is one thing and keeping it in sync with the requirements as they evolve is quite another. Attempts to manually keep the requirements, the plan, and the execution environment in-sync is time consuming and unreliable to say the least.

Analysis of execution results is a daunting task due to the sheer volume to the data generated in the process. Globally distributed teams executing the plan add another dimension of the complexity.

Agile methods for software development have proven themselves over the years since their first introduction in 2001. Such projects are characterized by higher success rates as evidenced by higher productivity, better quality, lower costs, and overall higher satisfaction.

In order to achieve such success rates in design verification projects, what is needed is a tool and methodology that uses agile principles to keep the verification plan, requirements, and all pertinent verification data in a central, dynamic, accesses controlled system from which a project completion strategy can be derived.

The Verification Management Problem

Let’s look at the problems that we are trying to address in some detail. These problems plague many a modern verification teams.
Verification planning

Detailed planning for Verification is often not attempted. Often it boils down to an activity that the team engages in at the start of the project.

There are very good reasons for not attempting to develop detailed verification plans. Why would verification teams spend time on something that is a resource sink rather than working on something that reduces their work load? As it is, verification teams are typically hard pressed for resources. Who has the time to write a document or a spreadsheet which will never be looked at once the project is underway?

Using a document editor or spreadsheet to create a static plan is a dud as the document becomes obsolete soon after it is created. During the lifetime of the project change comes from a variety to sources, such as:
· Requirement changes
· Design changes
· Changes to the verification strategy
· Adding more details in the verification plan as the project matures
· Resource changes which has an impact on verification priority and what gets verified.
· Schedule and Milestone changes

These changes affect the verification plan one way or the other. A static document is unable to capture these dependencies and it is impractical to change it every time some change happens. The result is an unchanging document that does not reflect the reality and is of little or no value to the engineering team and management.
Constantly evolving and highly dynamic verification

The exercise of Verification is, by its very nature highly dependent on the design changes. For example, as features are introduced appropriate testbenches and tests need to be setup to ensure that it is working as expected. As issues are discovered, new strategies are formed to address them.
Too much data, everywhere

Verification generates an excessive amount of data. The various versions of design, the testbenches, the regression runs, the random tests and the plethora of control variables, all contribute to the increase of data. Even with detailed coverage reports, it’s easy to lose track and be caught up in a numbers game.
Versions of design files, software revisions, verification goals, bugs …

It is highly typical of design teams to use some form of version control system to keep track of changes and manage design configurations. Verification teams often use a similar system to make sure they are aware of what it is they are verifying.
Dispersed data sources

Industry leading companies have begun to go beyond functional simulation and embrace the use of formal verification, emulation and acceleration to drive greater verification success in the drive for greater quality and schedule predictability. In addition, multi-vendor and multiple methodologies are now a norm rather than an exception. As a result, important information pertaining to the status and quality of the project is spread out.
Verification using various methodologies

Functional, Formal and Emulation based methodologies have different formats and schemes to report information about project progress.

Verification methodologies constantly evolve to keep pace with design complexity. New techniques and languages are constantly being evolved. Leading companies often have various teams using different methodologies with different degree of maturity.
Variety of Vendors with their specific formats

The trend to use multi vendor solutions is growing in the industry due to two reasons: a. customers want to maintain leverage with their EDA tool supplier and b. As the technology is maturing the tool performance and functionality are comparable from various vendors. Although UCIS(Universal Coverage Interoperability Standard) is working to ameliorate the problem of different vendors using their own database and reporting formats, however, as of this writing it’s still not a released work.
Other sources of information

The other sources of information include such things as:
· Bug tracking systems
· Project management system
· Requirement capture system

Distributed design and verification teams

With the growth of outsourcing and cross cultural design and verification teams a common platform for sharing data is absolutely essential for communication.

Possible solutions

A Verification management team can deploy a whole bunch of solutions to manage verification planning, execution and monitoring.
Static Documents and Spreadsheets

Historically, teams have used standard Office tools for managing verification projects. However, this is useful for small projects with a single, centralized team with less than 5 members.

It’s laborious and time consuming to keep such a spreadsheet up-to-date with changing requirements, plan and execution. Without any relational integrity it becomes difficult to maintain and share.
Using Wiki

Using a web based wiki is a good option for small teams. A wiki can be highly effective for collaboration. However, the unstructured nature of the wiki and lack of real time data prevents it from being used as a comprehensive platform for managing verification.
Home grown custom application

Given enough time and resources, a customized application can be constructed. It’s a classic buy vs. build problem, and companies can decide based on how much free time they have to devote to non-core activities. One thing to keep in mind is that creating an application is one thing, but scaling and evolving it with changing requirements often requires a dedicated team.
Using IVerifySpec (IVS)

IVS solves the problems mentioned in this paper. IVS is a Web2.0 application with a relational database backend. It gives verification team a central portal that can be accessed in a distributed environment.
IVS is designed around the theme of “separation of concerns”. It enables everyone on the project team to work in their specific niche area without the “concern” for how work is carried out in the other area. This loose coupling is advantageous because it avoids needless cross connections between the teams. The verification team-lead or the verification manager can create a verification plan while the verification team executes the plan, as changes are made to the verification plan, execution team automatically sees the updates. When the latest execution results are available, they are automatically entered into the system for everyone to see. Analysis charts are also created so project management can automatically keep abreast of the status of the project.
Developing Agile Verification Plans

It is rare that a verification plan will be created by a single individual, and the plan will be executed without any modifications. It is more typical that the plan would need constant adjustment to accommodate the verification dynamics, be it changing requirements, changing resources or changing priorities. What IVS brings is an ability for a group of individuals to collaborate and jointly develop and modify the plan.

Capturing Requirements

Capturing design requirements is often neglected by teams busy to implementing design and verifying functionality. However, maintaining a requirement set has the benefit of keeping everyone on the same page, which is an effective safeguard against miss-features and oversight. IVS provides agile, collaborative techniques to capture design requirements and with close proximity to the plan for verifying them.

Closing the loop on a plan

IVS provides links to a variety of data sources that provide information back to the system about the status of the verification project. For example, test pass/fail status, code coverage and functional coverage from the simulation environment, status of bugs from a bug tracking system, and any user define data that gives useful information for the project is available for the user to track in real time.
Such feedback information seen alongside the initial plan provides speedy closure to the project. IVS provides a Dashboard and many analytic charts to see current and historic trends in the project.
Success indicators

IVS includes analysis tools that provide deep insight into the verification team status. Past runs, code coverage, functional coverage, rate of increase of code coverage, rate of decrease of bugs, rate of increase of lines of verification code, rate or increase of design code, all such indicators are captured and presented in a meaningful way so that conclusions about the status of the project, its rate of progress and its estimated completion time can be predicted.

Ultimately what methodology is chosen to make the team agile depends on the seriousness of the problem of managing change.

Grants Small Business Expansion

Author: admin  //  Category: Small Business

Raising capital can be a harrowing affair for most of us, but particularly so for small struggling businesses, disadvantaged groups and those belonging to the rural sector. Often many of these people have done the rounds of the banks and traditional lending institutions only to be turned away because they have not been able to meet their very strict lending criteria. Unfortunately a large number of these people never know that there could be a multitude of grants available to them from both federal government and state agencies. Grants are often overlooked as the first place of call, and consequently much time and effort is wasted, not to mention the accompanying emotional stress.

Federal government grants total some $ 400 billion and they are distributed through 1,000 grant making agencies. The amount of money that is available is staggering, to say the least.

These figures alone should be enough to encourage anyone who needs to raise finance to at least spend some time on research to see if there is grant money that is available to them. Women in particular have countless avenues open to them. The figures show that over 500,000 women begin new business ventures each year. Of these, many would have been able to qualify to receive a grant of some kind to help them get started, and without this help these women would not have been able to raise the necessary capital.

There are many specialized industries that almost instantly qualify for grants. Sheltered workshops for example have many grant opportunities open to them. Locations of high unemployment will also qualify for federal government grants as this provides a great incentive for members of the community to start their own business in these areas.

Ordinarily, these people would not be able to raise money through the normal channels, where assets are required for security. Eligibility for grants is based more on the character of the person, and the amount of experience they have. Find out more from my website grants-review.com Naturally it has to be shown that the applicant has the ability to repay the money during a fixed period of time, but the terms are very flexible and attractive and are designed to help achieve success rather than hinder it.

Struggling businesses of all types will quite often be eligible for grant assistance. Those in business know only too well the hardships that are brought about by seasonal downturns, or natural disasters. These periods can leave the owner in the position that there is not enough cash flow to purchase new stock, and small business grants of up to $ 35,000 are designed to see the business owner through these tough times. Without this financial assistance many of these businesses would have to close their doors which would be such a tragic waste. It has been proven time and again, that with a little help during these small trading hiccups, the business will quickly recover and go on to bigger and better things.

Anyone who finds themselves in the position of either needing capital to start a new business venture, or to support an existing one, should seriously consider taking the time to explore the world of grants through the various state and federal agencies. To make it easy for people to ascertain their eligibility, there are now online agencies which streamline the whole lending process. Instead of making those tiresome visits and waiting in queues, it is now possible to attend to the whole submission process via the Internet from the comfort of your own home.
