Changing Trends: A Different Perspective on Entrepreneurial Thinking

When you walk inside the mall and you see something that you like the buy, the first thing that you
would do, obviously, is check on the price tag. As soon as you do, what is the first thing that comes to
your mind?
I’ve asked this question a lot of times to different individuals and here are some of the common
answers:
• Wow, for this price, this is really a bargain.
• I can get this for a cheaper price on a different store.
• Even if I want to buy this, I don’t think this is the right time.
• This is a good price for this merchandise.
There’s something trivial about this. Perhaps, the price that you are seeing is simply a strategy to trigger
your brain. It’s a different form of conditioning that businesses use to lure you into purchasing their
merchandise by making you believe that certain things are ‘given’ without you thinking that at that
price, the merchandise is indeed a real bargain.
Confused? You have to remember that we, as individuals, are conditioned beings. This means that we
respond to certain stimuli in certain ways and we often feel that certain retail products are offered
in bargain prices and never question them. Now, this thinking does not only permeate our retail
experience but our business and personal perspectives as well.
The status quo prevents people from questioning certain beliefs that we’ve all been used to. We do not
take into consideration that some things may not be exactly what they thought them to do. Or perhaps,
since things have been this way for eons of ages, there’s no other way to do it.
If you are entrepreneur, you have to be more creative and challenge the existing standards or status
quo. That is the entrepreneur’s perception which everyone should adopt. You need to be curious on a
lot of things, even questioning how you perceive ‘given’ things, processes and events because when you
do so, there’s always the possibility that you will discover that there is a better way to do it or there is a
better merchandise other than the one that you are holding. Of course, it all starts in accepting the fact
that you may be stuck with the old perception of things and that you have to be aware and accepting
when it comes to multitudes of possibilities.
